Behind the Curtain

What does it mean to be a good person?

When did we get to the point where the appearance of being good was more important than the embodiment of goodness?

I scroll on social media sometimes and ask this question. There’s so much (good) advice about practicing self-care, recognizing our toxic tendencies, doing inner work, etc. That’s all important. I’m learning how to do that daily.

The problem, however, is when those concepts end at the theoretical level. When they stop at a viral tweet, a trending YouTube video, or an Instagram caption that ends up on everyone’s Story. Social media only sees what we allow it to see, but social media isn’t all there is. It matters how we live when the recording ends, when all of our IG followers are logged off, when there’s no Internet connection and we’re forced to connect with the people around us.

Wellness memes and mental health advice from random Instagram accounts can only take us but so far. The actual transformation happens where no one can validate us with clicks or views. I hope we can keep doing the work and being honest with ourselves when the lights are turned off.

Anyways, keep breathing as always.

-D.
