The Spiral Staircase (Poem)

Cautious is the walk, diligent the eyes,
As must be the case
When walking down the endless spirals
That lead to places too far to see.

One missed step could be the end of you,
One too-friendly sway
On a neutral, varnished railing.
In the end, we’re all just trying to keep balance.

Swift, faux-comfortable,
You try to keep your gaze from the sides,
From the knowledge that where you’re heading
Awaits your arrival with gleaming teeth.

-D.
