The Lesson in Laundry

So, I decided that it was time to do laundry.

I’ve been cleaning my bedsheets and pillow covers and blankets all day. One thing I’ve never noticed is how cluttered laundry day can be. There are pillows strewn on the floor, everything that was on my bed is now scattered around my room, and it’s hard to walk out the door without tripping over something.

For now, the mess is anxiety-inducing.

And yet, when it’s all over, everything will be clean. The air will be fresh. And I will sleep on crisp sheets once more, beneath a heavy, washed comforter that smells of fabric softener and reminds me of purity and safety.

Sometimes we have to do laundry for the whole day so that we can fully breathe in and out at the end of it.

There’s a lesson in there somewhere. I’ll mull it over as I rest tonight.

In the midst of the awful and uncertain times we live in, I hope you have the opportunity to breathe and sleep and simply be. We’re at our best when we can find refuge within ourselves, even when none can be found in the environment in which we live.

Until next time, may pneuma continue to carry you.

-D.
